Peru's government has authorized for a group of U.S. marines to carry out a humanitarian aid project in Ayacucho, a region located in the south-central Andes of the country. According to opposition parties, the Andean country's government has authorized for "at least 1,000 armed U.S. marines" to be on Peruvian soil from Friday May 23 to September 10.

"These personnel will be entering the country to carry out the Humanitarian and Civic Assistance Program called "New Horizons 2008" in Ayacucho," said Peruvian congressional representatives after approving the government's request.

With nationalist leaders stating that the United States was looking to set up a military base in Peru, it was reported that the approval of the U.S. mission was not easy. According to representatives, the topic was extensively debated.Congresswoman Mercedes Cabanillas explained the mission included the construction of medical posts, water wells and school classrooms.

Peru's vice president called nationalists hypocrites for accepting aid from Cuba and Venezuela but refusing to accept help from the U.S. "Ayacucho can't afford to turn away North American aid," said the vice president.

Ayacucho is remembered as the region that was worst affected by terrorism in the 1980s when Shining Path guerrillas began a war against Peru's government.

haha, I love it how the nationalists are called hypocrites for wanting aid from Cuba and Venezuela and not the US. Lets see... which of those three nations has a history of invading Latin American countries, subverting their democratic process, setting up dictatorships, and destroying their economy's....

TODAY IT IS 1000 MARINES, IN A YEAR OR SO IT WILL 10,000 MARINES. THERE ARE OTHER MOVEMENTS OF UNITED STATES MILITARY INTO SOUTH AMERICA, AND IT ISN'T ALL FOR DOING NICE THINGS FOR THE POOR PEOPLE. WERE EVER THE AMERICAN MILITARY GOES, DEATH AND DESTRUCTION WILL SOON FOLLOW. THEN THE MULTI-NATIONAL COMPANIES COME IN TO EXPLOIT COUNTRY. THE AMERICAN GOVERNMENT NEVER TELLS THE TRUTH ABOUT ANYTHING. PERU NEEDS TO EXPELL THE AMERICAN TROOPS, BEFORE THEY HAVE LOST THEIR COUNTRY.

I know one of the Marines in Peru now, and let me tell you that he is doing good. He calls everyday and its aid...we are not trying to take over the country. They plan on making a three room school and a hospital.Since when is making a place to further education and a place to help the sick a bad thing? They are helping give jobs to people and aid. If more Marines go in, its to further the work of the men and women there now.

I know one of the Marines who is in Peru now. They are making a hospital and a three room school. Since when is aiding the sick and furthering the education of others a bad thing? They are giving jobs to people, and helping he sick. So what if more Marines enter Peru, they are not trying to take over. I think it is sick that people think that they are doing horrible things. They are boosting the economy if anything becasue they are buying things for their loved ones back home. They are not trying to over take anything.
